For more than 25 years, a Texas doctor quietly worked alone in his barn on a project most people would have abandoned long ago. What began as a woodworking hobby slowly turned into an obsession—building a full-scale, 42-foot wooden schooner entirely by hand.
Using East Texas timber and New England plans dating back to 1921, he cut the trees, shaped the planks, and assembled every piece himself. No deadlines. No shortcuts. Just patience, persistence, and a lifelong dream taking shape one board at a time.
When the boat was finally finished, the real test came—moving it out of the barn, launching it into open water, and seeing if it would float. What followed was triumph, setback, resilience, and ultimately the moment every builder waits for: unfurled sails and a vessel moving under its own power.
This is a story about obsession, craftsmanship, and what can happen when someone refuses to quit on a dream—no matter how long it takes.
