PSA AK-104: American Made Urban Fighting Rifle

Today I'll be doing my review of the Palmetto State Armory AK-104.

The AK-104 is an interesting variation of the AK platform to me, due to it's short barrel length while still maintaining a decent muzzle velocity for the cartridge it fires, 7.62x39.

The standard barrel length for an AKM/103 is 16" with a muzzle velocity of 2300 FPS, while the AK-104 has a barrel length of 12.5", and a muzzle velocity of 2200 FPS. This makes for a compact powerhouse of a gun when you consider that 7.62x39 is a round dependent on mass rather than velocity for it's terminal effectiveness. This is in stark contrast to 5.56, which is heavily dependent on velocity for it's terminal effectiveness, and suffers from heavy velocity reduction when you cut the barrel down.

With short barreled 5.56 guns being the popular choice for CQB in the states, it made me ask the question. Is a short barreled AK in 7.62x39, like the PSA AK-104, a better option? This is something I'll test in a future video, which will perhaps answer that question.
