Laspa Village – Gateway to the Bankatiya Trek
Laspa, perched at an elevation of 3,350 meters, is the first village of the Johar Valley and the starting point for the celebrated Bankatiya Trek. Nestled amid alpine meadows and snow-clad Himalayan peaks, Laspa is a place where natural beauty and cultural heritage come together seamlessly.
The village is renowned for its herb cultivation, with residents traditionally harvesting medicinal and aromatic plants found in the high-altitude ecosystem. Alongside this, livestock rearing remains the main occupation, reflecting the pastoral traditions of the Johar Valley. Sheep and goats not only support livelihoods but also form an essential part of the community’s cultural identity.
Laspa is also known for its warm hospitality and resilience. Its stone-built homes and terraced fields create a landscape that speaks of centuries-old adaptation to high mountain living.
Ecologically, Laspa is rich in biodiversity—rhododendron forests, birch groves, and juniper thickets dominate the landscape, while the surrounding region provides habitat to numerous bird and butterfly species. This blend of ecological wealth and cultural vibrancy makes Laspa much more than a trekking base—it is a living heritage site of the Johar Valley.
For trekkers, researchers, and explorers, Laspa offers a rare opportunity to witness the interconnection of nature, culture, and traditional livelihoods before continuing toward the Bankatiya base camp (3,510 m).
