Scoots and spooks under saddle are external behaviours that tell us something about how the horse is feeling internally. Usually horses that spook are feeling scared and haven't been shown a better way of responding to pressure.
In this training progression, the mare moves her feet when she is scared but doesn't let go of the fear she feels internally. By teaching her to soften under the pressure instead of brace, we see her learn a new way of responding to a pressure that initially scared her.
