What is Genomic imprinting?
Stamping of the gene during the formation of egg and sperm cells. This stamping process, called methylation, (Attaches small molecules called methyl groups to certain segments of DNA)
Angiopserms and Genomic imprinting
Deviations from the ratio of two maternal (2m) to one paternal (1p) genomes in the endosperm cause endosperm failure in interploidy crosses.
Increased contributions of maternal genome: Inhibits proliferation of the endosperm.
Increased contributions of paternal genomes : Endosperm excess.
Triploid Block effect
Mating with partners of lower ploidy causes incompatibility in the endosperm leading to the formation of non-viable progeny
Parental Conflict theory (Kinship theory)
Maternally expressed imprinted genes : Limit nutrient flow to the embryo
Paternally expressed imprinted genes : Promote embryo growth
