[1] Yes, I understand they're not "banning" teaching about MLK, they're "just taking it off the required list". But there's a fundamental contradiction in that vague appeal to "leave it up to the districts" in a law whose goal is to make sure every district doesn't teach the nasty CRT. Either localism is good and it should be up to districts to teach CRT if they want, or state level power is good and we should probably use some of it make sure kids learn about civil rights. To call it a contradiction may be a bit of a misnomer though, it's possible they just don't want kids to learn some parts of the civil rights history (or that they can live with kids getting taught an incomplete history).
[2] This is hardly even speculation; proponents of anti-CRT legislation will at times say things like "America can't survive if this is what our kids learn", which is an interesting way to admit that our national sense of identity relies on at least a touch of ignorance.
[3] Did you know West Virginia has had a long and scary history of moneyed interests trying to stop teaching about the coal wars? Like various common text books constantly (and we can only imagine intentionally) leaving out the coal wars but mentioning the state's role in WW1 (and other maybe less related topics within the same same decade). Seems they're really committed to getting rid of this rampant critical class theory we have on our hands!
