"He (Brahimi) is in Kabul today to talk to the leadership here about a smooth transition of power on the 22nd of December. He will be meeting with Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, with Professor Rabbani, with General Fahim and with other members of the leadership in Kabul to listen to their views regarding the smooth transition of power on the 22nd of December."

"The four groups who were in Bonn when they signed on to this agreement made a specific request to the Security Council to consider the early deployment of a security force in Kabul. Whichever force is deployed will be deployed with the full agreement of the Afghan authorities. Let me remind you that nothing the UN is doing here is being imposed on the Afghan people. This has to be a homegrown solution, a one hundred percent Afghan solution."

"We had a discussion concerning implementing the Bonn agreement for the 22nd of December. With God's help, it will be successful and we are completely ready to put it in place. Regarding the presence of international troops, we have an agreement for a limited number of peacekeepers for keeping peace in Afghanistan. They should be present but, about the details, we still have to speak to those with special responsibility for peacekeeping troops at the United Nations."

STORYLINE:
UN Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi continued his diplomatic visit to Kabul on Tuesday meeting General Mohammad Qassem Fahim, the military commander of the Northern Alliance and defence minister in the new Afghan government.
Trying to smooth the way for the new post-Taliban government, Brahimi arrived in the capital earlier in the day for talks with leaders of some of Afghanistan's quarrelsome political factions.
