This video will introduce the two bridges in Chai Wan, namely the Tai Tam Gap Stone Bridge (aka Ghost Bridge) and Floating Steel Bridge.
The former one is actually the water viaduct of the Mount Parker Lower Catchwater, it was constructed to bring the rain water from Mount Parker to Tai Tam Reservoir. On top of the water viaduct, it was covered to provide a passage for the people working in the water treatment plant. During the Japanese occupation in the WWII, people living in the valley hearing horrific noise in the direction of the bridge, it was later dubbed as Ghost Bridge since.
The latter is actually the service walkway of the water pipes serving the Shau Kei Wan area. Almost 80% of the walkway is consisting of steel bridges and boardwalks, because of very special design of the bridge supports (probably cantilever type), part of the steel bridge looks like it is floating on the hill.
The whole route is approx. 4km long comprising the two bridges. As they are very close to each other, hikers or walkers will do the two bridges together. It will take approx. 1.5 - 2 hours to finish including photo taking and is suitable for families. As the floating steel bridge is part of the Water Service Dept facility, most of the times the gates will be locked, a little bit climbing might be needed.
I would recommend to take the bus no. 9 at the Shau Kei Wan MTR Station and get off at Sai Wan Waterworks, so that you don’t need to walk up the stair at Shau Kei Wan.
