Katsuji (活字), or metal movable type, is more than just a printing technique — it’s a physical embodiment of Japan’s written heritage. While woodblock printing dominated much of the Edo period, influenced by ideas from Europe and Korean in the 16th and 17th century pioneers like Motoki Shōzō and his students introduced modern metal type, helping to democratize access to books, newspapers, and knowledge across Japan. In a language with thousands of kanji, plus hiragana and katakana, the act of hand-picking each tiny lead character and composing lines by hand speaks to a level of care and craft that mirrors Japan’s distinct dedication to detail and craftsmanship.

At the heart of that tradition stands Nakamura Katsuji, a letterpress workshop located in Ginza, Tokyo. Founded in 1910 in the former Kyōbashi-Kobiki-machi, they have navigated more than a century of change; from purely casting and selling type, to introducing offset printing, all while preserving a set of metal typefaces and continuing to make letterpress prints. Their shop, lined with centuries-worth of type drawers, still ring out with the analog rhythm of their unchanged presses. In a digitally dominated era, Nakamura Katsuji stands as a reminder to the importance of analog connection by keeping the tactile, human rhythm of active type alive.

活字（Katsuji）、いわゆる金属活字は、単なる印刷技術ではなく、日本の文字文化そのものを物理的に体現する存在である。江戸時代の大半で木版印刷が主流だった一方で、16〜17世紀にヨーロッパや朝鮮の技術の影響を受け、本木昌造やその門人たちによって近代的な金属活字が導入され、日本中で書物・新聞・知識へのアクセスを広げる一助となった。数千に及ぶ漢字に加えて、ひらがな・カタカナを有する日本語において、小さな鉛の活字を一字ずつ選び、手作業で行を組んでいくことは、日本の細部へのこだわりや緻密な職人技に通じる精神を体現している。

この伝統の中心にあるのが、東京・銀座にある活版印刷所 中村活字 である。1910年、旧京橋木挽町で創業した彼らは、活字の鋳造と販売だけを行っていた時代から、オフセット印刷の導入、そして金属活字の保全と活版印刷の継続まで、100年以上にわたる変化を乗り越えてきた。長い年月を蓄えた無数の活字棚に囲まれた店内では、今もなお変わらない印刷機のアナログなリズムが響き続けている。デジタルが支配する現代において、中村活字は、手で触れられる“活きた活字”の人間的な温度とリズムを守り続けることで、アナログなつながりの重要性を静かに語りかけている。
