On May 15, 1918 Corporal Henry Johnson fought off a German raid with just a knife after running out of bullets and grenades. He took out four Germans, wounded 20 more, and suffered 21 wounds while saving his wounded comrade. France awarded him the Croix de Guerre immediately. America gave him nothing. He died broke at 32, forgotten. It took 77 years for a Purple Heart, 97 years for the Medal of Honor. The soldier Germans called "Black Death" proved his courage.
