Safe positioning of the patient for surgery is the shared responsibility of the surgeon, anesthetist and OR nurses. Although the ultimate objective is to provide optimal access to the surgical site, consideration must be given to how positioning may adversely affect the patient. It is important therefore that this objective be carefully balanced against the potential cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular and skin effects of the desired position.
