It is an unalloyed pleasure to hear the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera play and sound here like its former fabled self, the orchestra’s singular style and sonorities being so crucial to this particular work. On another note, it is lamentable that the planned recording of this work for Teldec sometime in ’01 for which Studer had been presumably chosen as the Marschallin and which would have become part of Giuseppe Sinopoli’s series of Dresden recordings of the works of Richard Strauss for the record label, was not to be due to Mo. Sinopoli’s untimely passing that same year.
Music by Richard Strauss
Libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal
