The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in Confederate states. But the 13th Amendment, passed in 1865, abolished slavery everywhere. No exceptions. Lincoln pushed hard for it-knowing that without it, slavery could return. The war ended. Slavery ended. But the struggle for justice? That was just beginning.
