Welcome to my comprehensive guide on essential sewing tools for beginners. These are only the must-have tools every sewing enthusiast needs in their arsenal. From measuring and cutting to stitching and finishing, I'll walk you through each essential tool, explaining its purpose, how to use it effectively and buy advice for each.

A few extra words on each tool:

• Chalk - the more colors, the better. But don't go crazy with it.

• Invisible/Transparent Ruler - surprisingly this is the one I want to caution you when buying. I had qualms with the two I used before designing my own sewing ruler.

• Measuring Tape - over time these can be stretched out, thus distorting the measurements. Use em as needed, just keep this in mind down the road.

• Scissors - the right pair of scissors can make all the difference. Fabric shops use large, heavy scissors because they're cutting large rolls. This is overkill for most home enthusiasts. Find a pair that feels comfortable for you.

• Seam Ripper - there are even more ergonomic versions than what I use that seem intriguing. What is the red ball at the tip of the seam ripper? It's there to protect the fabric from being accidentally punctured. Mistakes happen, it's ok :)

• Thread Snipper - optional item, not essential but I really, really enjoy the tactile feedback.

• Sewing Pins - sharp needles for woven, ballpoint for knit. Plastic heads melt but they're lighter and more affordable. I poke myself all the time, so I always choose sewing clips when possible.

• Sewing Clips - these were a game changer for me. I can achieve the same fixing from pins but 10x faster and safer. Also love the colors :)

• Sewing Needles - just like sewing pins, sharp needles for woven, ballpoint for knit.

• Iron & Ironing Board - start with a home iron.
