Beginner Drum Lessons on Electric Drums - First Drum Beat

Hello and welcome to this video.

In this video you will learn your first full drum kit beat using the hi-hat, snare drum and bass drum.

This is typically what you’d learn in your first lesson with me (adults). 🤝

You don’t need a drum kit to complete this, you can tap on your hands and knees and use your foot to tap on the floor.

Step 1 involves tapping the hi-hat, with the counts of “1..2..”

Step 2 adds the snare drum on the second count synchronised with the hi-hat.

Step 3 adds the bass drum on the first count synchronised with the hi-hat.

If you’re right handed you’ll cross your hands over the top of your left hand to hit the hi-hat. If you’re left handed you’ll use your left hand to hit it, and this is called the open handed technique.

The video includes practise advice such as starting slowly and using your voice to command your body (to help muscle memory and send signals from your brain to your limbs). 🧠

Please be patient with this one, it might take you a few attempts to nail it. 👍

Song wise, Billie Jean by Michael Jackson is always a good starting point, or there are other songs that use this beat such as You Make My Dreams by Daryl Hall & John Oates, or a nice steady tempo song called Dry Your Eyes by The Streets. 🎶

I’ve included the written chart at the end of the video to help you visualise the beat. Don’t worry so much about reading the drum notation at this point. Instead, focus on correct coordination and timing. ⌚️

Use music to play along to, to help you feel the beat and backbeat - a regular checkpoint to help keep the pulse and rhythm. The best example of a backbeat is the handclap part in We Will Rock You by Queen. 🥁

I also help you with your bass drum pedal technique. Don’t forget to keep your heel on the pedal and use the balls of your feet.
