In AdS/CFT duality, at least in the case of D=3, I will argue that the basic CFT observables are not affected by ensemble averaging due to disconnected boundaries. I will also discuss the question of why then ensemble averaging appears to affect black hole observables. Based on arXiv:2202.01372 with J.-M. Schlenker
