It's the middle of 1942, the Soviet Union is struggling to repel a major German offensive in southern Russia. The US is victorious at the Battle of Midway, but the British campaign in North Africa is at a crossroads. The so called Desert Fox, Erwin Rommel has driven them out of Libya and pushed the British Eighth Army into Egypt.
Yet two battles at El Alamein on Egypt's northern coast push the advance to a halt. A brutal standoff throughout July ends in stalemate, but sees the Panzer Army Africa stopped in its tracks, and just three months later, beginning on the 23rd of October, the charismatic and controversial Lieutenant General Bernard 'Monty' Montgomery secures the British Army's first decisive victory against the axis, one which boosted morale and helped Change the war. But What if this victory didn't occur?
Joining James Hanson this week is historian and researcher at the Tank museum Chris Copson, along with historian and author Rear-Admiral Dr Chris Parry.
