The Flames - The Flame (2025 Album Remix)

The Flames were a South African rock group that played a mix of covers and originals, with the Beatles being one of their biggest influences. In 1969 they were performing in London where Al and Carl discovered them, and Carl in particular was fascinated by them. He ended up producing their next album, which was engineered by Stephen Desper and released on Brother Records. It was actually the first album ever released in quadraphonic sound, and unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) the album has never been remastered - the copy we hear online and on streaming services is a needledrop of the original vinyl.

With this mix I wanted to rematrix the sound for stereo playback, as well as clean up the audio somewhat. The quality is still very good (thank you Desper) but vinyl can only produce so good of a sound. Plus, as was often around this time, the vocals were quite low in the mix, to the point of being buried in places. I wanted to pull them out and really let the group's incredible vocals shine.
