We were up by 1:30 am. We put on our summit gear, had a light breakfast (biscuits and black tea/coffee) and by 2:40am, we were in formation ready to chase the Lenana Peak on Mt Kenya. The plan being to reach the summit in time for the African sunrise. I know you've heard good things about it.
Chasing the summit is a steep affair. No more soft life. This is usually the longest and most testing day of a multi-day hike.
The terrain is on a rocky track with some very minor scrambling. We walked on the loose sand and rocks. And would sometimes slide. So we had to be careful and our hiking poles came through.
The night was not too cold, the sky was beautiful and we were all determined to make it.
It got tougher the higher up we went but we stuck together, encouraged each other and stopped for water breaks when one of us needed it. At 6:50am on 1st April, we all made it to the Lenana Peak on Mt Kenya.
Guys, I couldn't hold back my tears. I had had a conversation with my creator and this safe successful climb meant the world to me.
I remember almost tripping when going where the sign stands because I couldn't see clearly. Y'all, climbing mountains has made me connect with myself and my creator on crazy levels.
We then took photos as a group and also solo photos then chilled a bit and began our descent.
I was telling someone the other day, just because you've summitted, doesn't mean the climb is over. It means you are simply halfway through your mission lol.
We descended for about an hour and chilled by Harris Tarn. To take in the fact that we'd just summitted, to catch a light snack because hunger was doing the thing and to take pictures.
We then descended to a location close to Minto's hut for a full breakfast. The views served! After a short rest, we descended further to Lake Michaelson where we took some fire pictures at its viewpoint. From there we walked on to Lake Ellis camp along the gorges valley where the rain escorted us. The rain stopped as we approached the Nithi River. We chilled there for a bit. Then went up to Lake Ellis campsite for dinner, bonfire and overnight camping.
