To keep the Narcissistic Families happy and distracted from pain, The Mascot Child puts on the face of a clown as an attempt to keep the family system from breaking down. Some children of dysfunctional families become the scapegoat, the golden child, the lost child, or the mascot.

The Mascot Child is usually the youngest and uses humor to defend against family pain. Although the mascot looks happy and appears to be having fun, he or she is suffering greatly inside.

Some mascots grow up to be comedians and use sarcasm and dark humor as coping mechanisms. Some fill their hole in the soul with substance abuse later in life.
