1966 (Bing-Bang-Boom Big Band is what this song is all about, and as always, Shirley and her huge voice Delivers, and then some! This is a track from Shirley Bassey LP titled, "I've Got A Song For You' and in the USA the Album was titled, 'Shirley Meets Bassey.'
ABOUT the LP, I've Got A Song For You:
I've Got A Song for You is a 1966 album by Shirley Bassey. Bassey had left EMI's Columbia Label, and this was her first album for United Artists, a label she would remain with for approximately 14 years (until it was sold, ironically enough, to EMI). This album and the following release And We Were Lovers were produced by Bassey's former husband, Kenneth Hume. (Their marriage had ended in divorce in 1965, but he continued to act as her manager, and for these two albums, her producer.) The album entered the UK Albums Chart at #26, but failed to chart in the US, despite her having received outstanding reviews for live engagements in New York and Las Vegas that same year, and the fact that the album was recorded in New York. It was an inauspicious start for her at UA, but this would change in 1970 (save one EMI/Columbia album issued after she left for United Artists, most likely previously recorded material, and one compilation album). In 1970, Bassey would begin to produce more contemporary pop-oriented albums, but here in 1966, despite scoring her biggest hit with Goldfinger a year or so earlier, she was still firmly in the traditional pop genre.
This LP may not have been one of Shirley's higher selling studio recording LPs, but this track, once again, shows off her powerful high-fidelity 'no holding back' vocal abilities which she has always been so well known for. But even with such a powerful voice, Bassey knew she had to change and sing more contemporary POP, and she did this to great success starting in the late 1960's/early 1970's. To date, Bassey is still the number 1 selling female recording artist in the UK of all time. But, it's her live big-belter performances singing many songs from the 50's & 60's traditional standards genre, which keep her fans coming back for more and more.
LYRICS:
Move over, sun, and give me some sky
I got me some wings I'm eager to try
I may be unknown but wait till I've flown
You're gonna hear from me
Make me some room, you people up there
On top of the world, I'll meet you, I swear
I'm stakin' my claim, so remember my name
You're gonna hear from me
Fortune, smile on the road before me
I am fortune's child
Listen, world, you can't ignore me
I've got a song that longs to be played
Raise up my flag, begin my parade
Then watch the world over start comin' up clover
That's how it's gonna be
I've got a song that longs to be played
Raise up my flag, begin my parade
Then watch the world over start comin' up clover
That's how it's gonna be, watch me
You're gonna hear,
You're gonna hear from me
