Deep Dive Survivor explores one of Newfoundland’s most haunting Cold War crash sites — the remains of a USAF RB-36 that slammed into the rugged mountainside of Burgoyne’s Cove in 1953.
On a top-secret mission to test North American air defenses, this massive bomber departed the Canary Islands under complete radio silence, flying below 500 ft to avoid radar detection. The crew navigated only with sextants and relied on a weather forecast that shifted dramatically mid-flight. Their objective: fly north over the Atlantic, slip unseen into U.S. airspace near Maine, climb to 40,000 ft, and conduct mock bombing runs over the continental United States.
But tragedy struck.
Lost in worsening weather, blinded by zero visibility, and unknowingly off course, the RB-36 veered toward Newfoundland’s coast. The aircraft collided with a mountainside near Burgoyne’s Cove, killing all 23 servicemen on impact.
In this episode, we take on a steep, challenging hike through dense forest and unforgiving terrain to reach what remains of the wreckage. Twisted metal, scattered debris, and the desolate location tell a chilling story frozen in time.
Even more unsettling: a second B-36 dispatched to locate the missing aircraft also vanished—with all 10 crew members—and was never found.
Join us as we revisit this forgotten chapter of Cold War history, explore the crash site, and pay tribute to the servicemen who lost their lives on this mysterious mission.
