Special thanks to Jay Nakagawa for transferring the tapes
The Spring of 1973 saw Bill Chase fronting a rare 10-piece big band filled with explosive talents. Sadly, by late June (73) the funds had been completely exhausted attempting to hold this amazing entourage together. Luckily, Bill made reel to reel tapes from several of the concerts to preserve for future generations of musicians to enjoy and find inspiration.
By this point in history, bands such as John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra were gaining international popularity. Consequently, audiences were "accepting" and intrigued by jazz/rock fusion sounds. Bill had decided to experiment with all instrumental charts and the addition of a trombone and auxiliary percussion (no doubt inspired by Airto).
The first 6 minutes or so features a pre-concert soundcheck with the rhythm section exploring some melodic jazz/rock fusion improve.
The band here includes:
Bill Chase-Lead & Solo Trumpet
Jay Sollenberger-Asst. Lead Trumpet
Carl Haiflie-Trumpet
Jerry Vanblair-Jazz Trumpet & Flugelhorn
Wally Yohn-Keyboards
Russ Freeland-Trombone, Flute
Tony DeCaprio-Guitar
Dartanyan Brown-Electric Bass Guitar
Tommy Gordon-Drums
Fred Raulston-Aux. percussion
