In this video, we take a deep dive into the Olympus 005-1, one of the most advanced and expensive Soviet high-end reel-to-reel tape recorders ever made.
Released in 1989, well into the compact disc era, the Olympus 005-1 is a fascinating example of late-Soviet engineering ambition. Costing 1,560 rubles (nearly 10 months of an engineer’s salary), this machine packed cutting-edge electronics into a format the rest of the world was already abandoning.
Despite that, the Olympus 005-1 features capabilities I’ve never seen in American, European, or Japanese reel-to-reel machines, even the most high-tech ones.
