Inverted Fishtail Braid Tutorial

Fishtail braids may seem intimidating, but they are amazingly simple when broken down, step by step. A fishtail braid is one of my favorite braids because they are different and are guaranteed to give you a hairstyle that will stand out from the crowd. I want to share with you an extremely easy and step by step inverted fishtail braid tutorial so that you can confidently rock this bohemian braid anytime you want!

Here is a written step by step process of how to create a beautiful inverted fishtail braid.

• I am going to be doing a side part to start my fishtail braid. Take a small section about two inches wide and split it in the middle. You now have two sections of hair to work with.
• Take the outside portion (about one third) of strand one, and cross it underneath itself, over to strand two, combining it with strand two.
• Now take the outside third of strand two, cross it underneath itself, over to strand one, combining it with strand one.
• At this point in the dutch fishtail braid, add additional hair to strand one (just like a dutch braid) and take the outer third of strand one and cross it underneath itself over to strand two, just like in step one.
• Now add extra hair to strand two, cross the outer third under to strand one, add more hair to strand one, and continue the process all the way down.
• The biggest difference between the dutch fishtail braid and a standard dutch braid is that you are working with two sections of hair rather than three sections of hair. The third strand for the braid is taken from the outer third of each section of hair as you create the beautiful fishtail braid down the side of your head.
• As you get farther down your head, add smaller portions of hair from the front of your head (because it is closer to your face and less hair) and you add consistently bigger portions from the back of your head where all your hair is.
• By the time you work your inverted fishtail braid to the bottom of your head, you should be adding hair to both strand one and two from the back of your head where most of your hair is.
• At the bottom of your head do a regular fishtail braid all the way down.
• As I get down to the end of my fishtail braid, I am going to secure it with a small elastic.
• Finally, pancake or loosen the braid to make it fill out so that the fishtail braid will look thicker and fuller like a bohemian fishtail braid.
• I always like my fishtail to look a little messy because it is such a bohemian looking braid. If you prefer a sleek braid you do not have to do this step.
• I finish my inverted fishtail braid by pulling a little hair down on my right and left side to make the fishtail hairstyle look soft and natural.
