Porto Santo Stefano, the capital of the Argentario, is a picturesque seaside village and holiday resort already appreciated at the time of imperial Rome. The inhabited center of Porto Santo Stefano extends along the two ports. The commercial port, the largest, is the first to come across as you enter the town, where fishing boats moor and ferries to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri dock. The small port of Pilarella, on the other hand, is the place for strolling and relaxing in Porto Santo Stefano. You can get there along the promenade designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, here the tables of the bars and restaurants overlook the sea and allow you to taste the local cuisine or sip a drink in total relaxation while admiring the view of this enchanting seaside village. 05:20
Curiosity:
✱🎵Raffaella Carrà used to travel to Tuscany for vacations, to her beach house. In particular, Porto Santo Stefano was the village of choice, where the artist owned a beautiful house on the promontory, known as Villa di Cala Piccola.
It was a very large, elegant and fine villa, well set in the scenic surroundings of the Argentario. Located opposite the island of Giglio, the house is about 7 km from the small fishing village.
✱🏰Spanish fortress:
Built between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century with the entry of Porto Santo Stefano into the State of the Presidi, in order to defend the coast and the town and repel enemy attacks and incursions from the sea. The work, which proceeded slowly, was completed in 1636 with some improvements made by the military engineer Pedro Álvarez. In the early 19th century, during the Napoleonic period, the fortification was strengthened by the French to withstand the assaults of British ships. Restructured by the Lorraine after the annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the fortress continued to perform military functions even after the unification of Italy, acting as a strategic garrison during the First World War.
✱Monument to the memory of the civilians who died under the bombings of 1943, located on the seafront of the Navigators, consists of a deactivated aircraft bomb and two stems with the names of the fallen 09:10
✱ Giorgetto Giugiaro, who designed this promenade is a very famous designer, in addition to cars like Alfa Romeo,Maserati,Ferrari etc,Giugiaro designed camera bodies for Nikon and much more.
