The Black Cats have waited almost 10 years for this moment. That’s how long it’s been since their last Premier League match against Newcastle United, the only other meeting in that time being Sunderland's bitter 3-0 defeat in the FA Cup last year.
And in those 10 years, Sunderland have been through the mill. A club with six top-flight league titles to their name ought not to be playing in the third tier, but that’s where they were, in League One, for four long years. It must have felt like they would never return.
When the club was down there, at its lowest point, there will have been some Sunderland fans who let themselves daydream of being back in the Premier League and beating Newcastle again.
