Unlock the power of VBA for text file handling!
In this video, we explore three essential techniques for reading text files into VBA:
• ADODB Stream
• File System Object (FSO)
• Classic File Input (Open/FreeFile)
We’ll compare each technique, look at the impact of using Early Binding vs. Late Binding, as well as how Self-Healing Object Variable (SHOV) influence the performance of each of these techniques, and see how they perform to help you choose the best approach for your project.
**** UPDATE ****
After recording, I decided to do more testing.
What I discovered is that my initial results seem to hold true for small files which is commonly what we need to manipulate, but for larger files the portrait of performance changes and ADODB is dead last from a performance standpoint (at least when I tested). Instead, if you need to read the contents of large files you are best to use File Input followed by one of the FSO approaches. So, with the initial findings and now these new findings, File Input seems to be the best overall solution to handle all file sizes.
