The worlds highest milage Porsche 996 Turbo!

Last week Tom Thalmann came into our shop with his 2003 Porsche 996 Turbo that he has driven over 742,500 miles!

Tom and the incredible story of his journey with his Turbo would make any enthusiast stop, listen, and smile. In a world where people save their cars for the next owner, Tom has spent the last 22 years saying “f**k the resale value” and has driven his car over 1.2 million kilometers. It has a slew of interesting features like the rare optional aero, GT2 wheels, two-piece GT2 carbon bucket seats, carbon ceramic brakes, a roll cage, and so many other unique parts. I could go on and on about all of the details, personal touches, and history of the car that I learned, but in reality the bigger story is the relationship between man and machine. It’s the perfect example of what regular maintenance, attention, and amazing engineering can offer. Of course, the car isn’t perfect—it’s had some work and a few replacements over the years—but it still uses its original engine. I read recently that “a warrior in spotless armor has never seen battle,” and it is so fitting for this car. The blemishes and signs of use and wear only add to its character. All in all, what you have here is a true driver for a true driver’s car.

I can’t say enough good things about Tom. His passion and enthusiastic nature draw you in, and you quickly understand how someone could rack up that many miles on one car. He personifies the expression “it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.”

This video features Josh Oliver completing a full exterior detail on the Turbo after having driven from Rhode Island, fully around the Cabot Trail, and into Halifax. Our local Porsche Club was hosting their large end-of-summer meet in conjunction with a charity drive for a large group of members from the Porsche club of America who had sailed in on a cruise ship, and Tom was there to be a part of all the action.
