I started the final day sitting in 5th place with a weight of 18.72 lbs. My plan at take-off was to head to a different arm of same pocket where I had gone on days one and two. At the last minute, I headed to Honey Creek and it paid off! I had three of my five fish by 8 o'clock and a limit by 9:30 AM. I was able to cull multiple times. Two of the culls were in excess of a pound. I did lose one nice fish. At the time, I told my co-angler that losing that fish could come back to haunt me.
The Classic is a marathon and not a sprint! Three consistent days were critical to my success! I caught fish on the same four baits again on the final day. On the jig bite, I had two approaches.. One was casting across rocky areas such as points and flats. My retrieve was lowering my rod tip and slowly reeling to keep the bait moving just fast enough to stay in contact with the bottom. The second was casting and skipping into and around docks and letting it sit before starting the retrieve. My Texas rig was a stick bait. I also used a 1.5 Lucky Craft crank bait, and a wacky rigged stick bait.
Gear for the event:
Minn Kota Ulterra Quest, Johnny Morris Platinum Combos with 12 and 14 lb. Lures included Boss 3/8 or 7/16th jigs with blue gill pattern skirts and Zoom speed craw trailer in green pumpkin or green pumpkin purple, TX rigged green pumpkin stick baits , wacky rigs, VMC wacky rings, and Terry Bowden's blue-black stick bait.
Day Three weight was my biggest bat coming in at 11.40 lbs. giving me a three day total of 30.12 lbs. earning me my third Lady Bass Classic Champion Title!
