Depth Map doesn’t have to be a “special case” tool. In this lesson I show how to use it as a normal, everyday grading selector inside the Color tab — the same way you’d use a window or qualifier, but driven by distance.
What this lesson demonstrates (real node-tree workflow):
• Using Depth Map as an alpha/matte to control adjustments by distance
• Parallel node approach: one branch for SAT, one branch for EXP
• SAT node: add saturation based on depth, so the foreground gets a subtle creative lift
• EXP node: invert the matte to lower exposure in the background with a smooth falloff toward the product
• Matte cleanup so the transition feels natural (not “cut out”)
If you’ve avoided Depth Map because it felt too advanced or too “niche,” this is the practical introduction: use it like a daily driver for separation, focus, and mood — fast.
This is a preview lesson from my course.
