Pietro Scarpini was born in Rome in 1911. His mother was a pianist; he studied piano with Alfredo Casella and composition with Ottorino Respighi at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he also had teachers such as Alessandro Bustini, Bernardino Molinari (conducting), and Fernando Germani (organ). While still a student, he married musician Teresita Rimer in 1934 and graduated in 1937. At the request of his father, an army officer, he also attended courses in literature and philosophy at the University of Rome.

Pietro Scarpini passed away on November 27, 1997. That day his piano was still open, with Bach's Goldberg Variations open on the music stand.
