Tattooing
Name of the Scheduled tribe: Kutia Kondha
The Kutia Kondha tribe, primarily found in the Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts, is a traditional and indigenous community known for its ancient practices, including tattooing. This practice is deeply rooted in their cultural and spiritual beliefs, with tattoos often symbolizing life cycles, spiritual norms, and religious principles.
Kutia Kondha women are renowned for their vibrant attire and unique tattoo patterns. While men do not engage in tattooing, both married and unmarried women follow distinct tattoo patterns. The traditional ink for these tattoos is made from the black ashes of burned coir and banana leaves, mixed with water to form a semi-liquid paste. A sharp needle is used to pierce the skin, and the ink is applied repeatedly until the desired design is completed. Afterward, a balm made from turmeric and castor oil is applied to prevent infection.
While facial tattoos were once a common practice, recent trends show that women are increasingly opting to tattoo only their hands, reflecting a shift in cultural norms within the community. This may indicate changing perceptions of beauty, identity, or the influence of modernity on traditional practices.
