Unmissable Harish Salve Exclusive On The Constitution Debate | Republic TV

Harish Salve, former Solicitor General of India, Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court has expressed concerns about evolving judicial conduct and the need for a renewed constitutional debate in India. In an exclusive interview with Republic Media Network's Arnab Goswami, Salve criticized what he perceives as a troubling trend of judges engaging in headline-grabbing commentary rather than focusing on delivering well-reasoned judgments. He highlighted that this shift in judicial discourse has led to unnecessary controversies and confusion.

Salve also called for a debate on the Constitution during the ongoing winter session of Parliament, emphasizing the need to address emerging threats to it. He noted that the Constitution had only once come under significant shadow and stressed the importance of comprehensive public discourse on the matter. Additionally, Salve criticized former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud's decision to commission a new statue of Lady Justice, describing it as “unnecessary” in today’s era. He argued for broader public discussions before making such symbolic changes. Reflecting on the traditional statue of Lady Justice, Salve remarked on its enduring significance, stating, “I have grown up seeing a statue with a blindfold and a sword, and to me, they signified something. So please don’t provoke me into saying what I think.”
