This is a blast from the past to look back at the very first Marketing AI Conference back in 2019, where I had the pleasure and privilege of being the very first keynote speaker, other than Paul Roetzer, who was the conference founder.
This talk is really important because it gives you a look at what marketing AI was like three years before ChatGPT. At this point, the Transformers architecture invented by Google DeepMind existed and there were nascent language models that were being tested, but nothing was in production, nothing was available. July of 2021 really is when you would first start to see generative AI models start coming out from things like early diffusers and early large language models.
This look at 2019 is really all about classical AI and the ways that classical AI, regression and classification, played a role in marketing AI at the time. It's a great way to look back at the world that was in the days before Chat GPT and its kin, but also a reminder that just because we have generative AI today does not invalidate the existence of classical AI systems from the past. In many cases classical AI systems like regression analysis and things are things that generative AI can't do. It can write code to do those things, but the code it's writing is still classical AI.
