Vulcano, the first stop by boat from the north coast of Sicily, is the southern among the Aeolian islands. As the other six, Vulcano has its own character and peculiarity. As I said before, each one of the island in the archipelago is different and deserve a journey.
The first impact with Vulcano could be strange at least. While your boat is still docking, the smell of Sulfur will reach your nose. Don't worry about that, in a short time this annoying sensation will end. Remember that you are landing on a volcano, maybe a sleeping one but always a volcano. Sulphurous springs are almost everywhere, on the slopes and on the top of the volcano itself, under the sea and among the rocks. In fact the most renowned attraction are the thermal baths, just few meters from the harbour. Many visitors come to the island only to take an ablution in the sulphurous sludges of the natural pool near the old mines, really an amazing experience (watch for hot underwater stones!).
But Vulcano is not only this. The island offers beautiful seaside. The black sands of "Baia di Ponente" are extraordinary as it is the sunset seen from the beach with the farest Alicudi on the line of the horizon. A different view offers the southern coast of the island, in "contrada Gelso", facing the coastline of motherland Sicily. Some quite beaches over there are perfect for a relaxing swimming day. Take a look to the old Lighthouse, have a rest on the black sands of Donkey beach, watch to the little underwater geisers while snorkeling in the crystal clear waters. You'll love it.
I think that a journey in Vulcano won't be complete without hiking on the top of the "Sleeping Giant", the iconic volcano with its sulphurous fumaroles. This is not a tough hike but you must avoid the hottest hours especially in summer. Few kilometres of a gently climb and you'll be on the edge of the crater. Landscapes there will be unforgettable as the panorama over the entire Archipelago is fantastic.
This is probably the most relevant feature of Vulcano. Almost everywhere on the island you'll find wonderful viewpoints, natural windows opened on the Aeolian Islands, Sicilian coast and the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea. Vulcano is undoubtedly the Aeolian Belvedere.
