A. niger is an aerobic and resilient organism capable of growing in a wide range of environmental conditions.
Appearance: Its colonies are initially white or yellow and quickly turn dark brown or black due to the dense layer of asexual spores, or conidia.
Microscopic features: Under a microscope, it is characterized by long, smooth-walled stalks (conidiophores) that terminate in a large, spherical vesicle. The vesicle is covered in projections called phialides, which produce chains of rough, dark brown spores.
Habitat: It is found ubiquitously in the environment, particularly in soil, compost, and decaying vegetation. Indoors, it can be found in damp areas like basements, bathrooms, and HVAC systems.
