Join us in the Upton Bass workshop as we take on the restoration of a beautiful Pöllmann double bass for a customer. In this detailed look, we walk through the removal of the endpin block, the challenges caused by decades of string tension, and how a slipped seam and bulged ribs can be corrected without compromising the instrument.
We will trim and reshape the ribs, and install a new block. The top will have the graduation refined and a new bass bar fitted. These are some of the ways we bring this very well made German double bass back to its natural state for its player.
This repair isn’t unique to Pöllmann; it’s something many double basses face over time.
