Calypso om verkligheten (Calypso about reality) by Kulturföreningen Spartacus is something as unusual and rare as Swedish communist music from the 70s with a Caribbean rhythm.
1970s Sweden was lovely in many ways but didn't exactly have a very tropical feel around it, which is what makes this socialist caribbean song so interesting and rare. It was included on Kulturföreningen Spartacus and Warschawjanka's great cassette (!) album Solidaritetssånger - and I've never seen or heard it anywhere else. A real hidden gem among progg, the Swedish socialist music scene of that era.
Mentioned in the song:
(Curt) Nicolin - Swedish businessman who was the chairman of the Swedish Employers Association (one of the main enemies for all socialists) 1976–1984.
Gunnar Nilsson: Union man and chairman of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) 1973-1983.
(Olof) Palme: Social Democratic prime minister of Sweden 1969-1976 and 1982-1986.
Wallenberg: Sweden's main family of industrialists that dominated (and still does) big business in the country. I'm actually not sure who in the family this song is referring to, but it doesn't matter that much.
The Red Moose is a channel where I translate Swedish communist and socialist music (mostly from the 70s but also some modern ones). This includes anti-capitalist songs, worker songs and Vietnam songs. Subscribe if you want to support the channel and not miss any of the upcoming videos!
