ग्रीनलँड प्रकरणावरून युरोपने धडा घेतलेला आहे. अमेरिकेचे राष्ट्राध्यक्ष डोनाल्ड ट्रम्प असेपर्यंत युरोपची काही धडगत नाही, हे युरोपातील देशांच्या लक्षात आलेले आहे. दुसऱ्या महायुद्धानंतर आजपर्यंत अमेरिका युरोपच्या रक्षकाच्या भूमिकेत होता. आज तोच अमेरिका युरोपचे लचके तोडण्याचा मनसुबा ठेवून आहे. ही सगळी धडपड तेल, सोने, चांदी, रेअर अर्थ मिनरल्स आदीसाठी आहे. आर्क्टीक क्षेत्रात ही संपत्ती मुबलक प्रमाणात आहे. ग्रीनलँडप्रकरणी ट्रम्प यांनी तात्पुरती माघार घेतली असली तरी, ट्रम्प आणि रशियाचे राष्ट्राध्यक्ष ब्लादमीर पुतीन यांच्यात काही सेटींग झाले असावी, असा दाट संशय युरोपला आहे. त्यामुळेच कदाचित युरोपियन कमिशनच्या अध्यक्षा उरसुला वॉनडेर लेन यांनी युरोपातील देशांनी आर्क्टीक क्षेत्राच्या लष्करीकरणासाठी कंबर कसावी यासाठी हाक दिली आहे. सर्वत्र जंगलराज सुरू आहे, अशा परिस्थिती रात्री एकाकी बाहेर पडलेल्या देखण्या तरुणीसारखी आर्क्टीक क्षेत्राची अवस्था झाली आहे. रशियाचा धोका लक्षात घेऊन युरोपने ससंरक्षण खर्च वाढवण्याचे मनावर घेतले आहे. ९४० अब्ज ड़ॉलरच्या संरक्षण तरतुदीच्या प्रस्तावाबाबत युरोपातील देश गंभीर आहेत. नाटो गटातील प्रत्येक देशाने आपले डीफेन्स बजेट ५ टक्क्यांनी वाढवण्याचे लक्ष्य ठेवले आहे. वॉनडेरलेन यांनी ब्रुसेल येथे काल झालेल्या युरोपियन कौऊंसिलच्या बैठीकीत युरोपच्या सुरक्षेबाबत बोलताना आर्क्टीक क्षेत्राच्या सुरक्षेचा मुद्दा अधोरेखित केला आहे.

Perhaps because of this, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has called on European countries to brace themselves for the militarization of the Arctic region.
Lawlessness seems to prevail everywhere; in such a situation, the Arctic region resembles a beautiful young woman venturing out alone at night. Keeping the Russian threat in mind, Europe has decided to increase its defense spending. European countries are serious about a proposed defense provision of 940 billion dollars. Each country in the NATO alliance has set a target of increasing its defense budget to 5 percent. While speaking about Europe’s security at the European Council meeting held yesterday in Brussels, von der Leyen emphasized the issue of security in the Arctic region.
