How Hürrem Sultan looked in Real Life. Hürrem Sultan (1502/06-1558) was the wife of Süleiman the Magnificent. During Sultan Süleiman's reign he married Hürrem, a former slave/concubine. What makes her stand out is the fact that she broke royal protocol by being the first Ottoman slave to become the Sultan's wife. Then she stayed inside the Palace to help Süleiman govern. This was unprecedented because prior to her reign, the mothers of the Sultan's sons went with their sons to a remote province to govern. Never did a wife of the Sultan have so much power, let alone a former slave. This opened an era called the Sultanate of Woman.

Although Imperial women were physically secluded in the harem, the forging of networks was open to everyone and tracing Hürrem’s biography shows us the strategies that were available to ambitious Imperial women.
You see, The ‘Sultanate of Women’ era highlights that Haseki Sultans and Valide Sultans were able to influence the Imperial court and exert their own political power. Hurrem’s marriage to Suleiman allowed her to strategically establish these networks of power within the Imperial court in order to achieve her objectives.
