What is Biomimetic Dentistry? Summary & Benefits

This summary education video from 2013 gives a brief summary of biomimetic dentistry including the major concepts, history, and training/education. Biomimetic dentistry has grown rapidly, being practiced worldwide with more dentists getting trained every day. What Is Biomimetic Dentistry?
Translated literally, biomimetic dentistry means to "copy" what is "natural." The goal of this dental approach is to restore teeth using restorations and techniques to mimic the strength, function, and esthetics of natural teeth. Minimizing the need to shave or drill away more tooth structure is fundamental to this approach.

Adhesive dentistry was first used in 1949, but had very limited applications due to poor performance and complications. However, continuous improvement in the materials and our understanding of how to maximize adhesion has revolutionized the way we are able to restore teeth and preserve the healthy parts of the tooth rather than requiring more shaving. Unfortunately, many dentists have not been trained or updated in these concepts and believe these approaches are impossible or inferior.

Dental schools, such as the University of Southern California, have incorporated advanced training in Biomimetic dentistry as part of the curriculum.

When the best materials, science, and techniques are all combined, Biomimetic dental restorations are able to increase the bond strength to dentin by over 400%. This strong dentin bond is critical to the performance of biomimetic restorations. The bond strength achievable to dentin is in the same range as the natural bond of enamel to dentin in intact teeth.

Traditional Crown vs Biomimetic Restoration
A traditional crown preparation requires preparation and removal of 75% of the coronal tooth structure for resistance and retention of the crown. In contrast, a biomimetic restoration can preserve the intact tooth structure because the strong adhesive bond replaces the need for tooth preparation.

Preventing Root Canals
Biomimetic dentistry is able to prevent a majority of root canals through protocols and techniques including: caries removal endpoints, peripheral seal zone, restoration longevity, bonds strength, and preserving maximum amounts of intact tooth structure.
