👁️‍🗨️ Cataract Management — Nursing Overview:

🧠 1️⃣ Preoperative Care:
• Educate patient about cataract surgery procedure
• NPO 6–8 hours before surgery
• Administer prescribed mydriatic (dilating) and cycloplegic eye drops
• Remove contact lenses and eye makeup before procedure
• Monitor for any signs of infection — surgery is postponed if infection is present

💉 2️⃣ Postoperative Care:
• Use antibiotic and corticosteroid eye drops as prescribed
• Avoid bending, lifting, coughing, or straining — prevents increased intraocular pressure
• Wear an eye shield during sleep to prevent injury
• Do not rub or press on the eye
• Report immediately: severe pain, flashing lights, loss of vision, or bleeding
• Vision improves gradually over weeks after lens replacement

💡 3️⃣ Patient Teaching:
• Sunglasses outdoors to reduce light sensitivity
• Avoid swimming or dusty environments until healing completes
• Use clean tissues for eye wiping (from inner to outer canthus)

Always assess for infection, pain, and safety precautions after cataract surgery.
Remember: Cataract = Painless, progressive loss of vision with absent red reflex.
