At the Pretrial Justice Institute, we’re reshaping the front door of the justice system with a simple truth: real safety comes from strong, supported communities—not jail cells.
We mobilize local changemakers to advance antiracist, community-led pretrial justice that treats everyone with dignity, no matter their race, wealth, or zip code. Our vision is a future where people stay home with their families and support networks while facing charges, and where resources flow into community well-being instead of incarceration.
For nearly 50 years, we’ve been the nation’s only nonprofit focused exclusively on pretrial justice. We bring policy expertise, data, training, and lived experience together to help communities reduce unnecessary jail use and protect constitutional rights.
This is about more than reform. It’s about building a fairer, freer future from the ground up.
