Now, let’s kick this off with a Proton Mail review and jump straight into their privacy and security evaluation. Their main data center is under 1,000 meters of pure granite rock. But from a private email perspective, it’s pretty cool that Proton is open-source.

I was able to apply email encryption and I found self-destructing messages, if you want some extra secure email communication. But if you get a free plan, there’s not much else and everything is restricted: limited storage, limited messages, folders, labels, etc etc. The Proton Plus plan improves on each one of these aspects, but only the Visionary plan comes with a premium VPN.

🧪 Is Proton VPN safe?

Both Proton VPN free and premium versions have the same level of security. Proton’s jurisdiction lies in a privacy-friendly Switzerland, plus, they have an audited no-logs policy. Their encryption is also up to standards - either the standard AES-256 or the modern ChaCha20 cipher, depending on the tunneling protocol.

🧪 Proton VPN features

I like to use their fancy-named double VPN functionality Secure Core. If you want to go above and beyond for anonymity, then they have the Tor over VPN feature. Don’t expect the best VPN speeds though. Also, streaming support is there, but it only works with the premium version.

As I said, this is not a ProtonMail vs ProtonVPN comparison, but rather a bundle review. As no cybersecurity tool is foolproof, using them in conjunction is actually a great idea - but which provider to choose is completely up to you.
