The Last Samurai visits Dejima and Glover Garden in Nagasaki city and talks about their history. Dejima is the artificial island and port where Tokugawa shogunate traded with the Netherlands only when Japan had the isolation policy called Sakoku in Edo period. So it was the only gateway of Western knowledge and culture for Japan.
Glover garden was the residence of Thomas Blake Glover, a Scottish merchant at the end of Edo period. Glover had the relationship with Satsuma domain and Choshu domain who were anti Tokugawa shogunate. This residence is the oldest wooden European style building in Japan. And also this is the historical place where Samurais of Satsuma and Choshu or Sakamoto Ryoma often visited.
