The Vamana-Purana occupies the fourteenth place in the Puranic lists of the Mahāpurānas. It is named after Vamana (the Dwarf), the first human Avatara of Vişnu. The Vamana is the only Avatara-named Purana which contains a detailed and compre- hensive account of the Avatara (Vamana), whence it takes its name It gives the detailed account of the Vamana-avatara and deals with such important Puriņic topios as the bhuvana-koša, worship of Visnu and Siva, Devi-mahatmya, birth of Skanda, wars between the Devas and the Asuras, account of Kuruksetra and its tirthas, vratas, and a number of important akhyānas and upakhyānas Besides, also the Vam -P contains several special topics of its own which, perhaps, are not to be found in the other Puranas."
The Vamana Purana does not contain the narrow sectarian views, nor does it prescribe the bearing of various sectarian marks. It is not even mixed with elements of tantricism as some of the other Puranas are. All these facts tend to show that the Vamana-Purana belongs to an early age of the Purana-compilations. From the point of the extent of its text, its available text consists only of 6000 slokas or even less.
