Full Lyrics to Hark The Herald Angels Sing:
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled."
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King."
Christ, by highest heav'n adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail th' incarnate Deity,
Pleased as Man with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King."
Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Ris'n with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King."
Origin: The lyrics for "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" were originally written by the famous English Methodist leader and poet, Charles Wesley (1707–1788), and first published in 1739. His original opening line was "Hark! how all the welkin rings." The carol's transformation into the majestic form we know today was completed when it was paired with a completely different piece of music in the mid-19th century. The rousing tune is an adaptation of a cantata written by German composer Felix Mendelssohn in 1840 to commemorate the invention of the printing press. In 1855, English musician William H. Cummings adapted Mendelssohn's secular music specifically to fit Wesley's Christmas lyrics, creating the glorious, triumphant carol celebrated worldwide.
