भौगोलिक ज्ञान का विकास (Evolution of Geographical Knowledge)
भारत मानव सभ्यता के प्राचीनतम उद्गम स्थलों में से एक है। पश्चिमोत्तर भारत में ईसा से 3000 से 1500 वर्ष पूर्व की अवधि में सिन्धु घाटी सभ्यता उन्नत अवस्था में थी। पुरातात्विक खुदाइयों से प्राप्त साक्ष्यों तथा नगरों के भग्नावशेषों से पता चलता है कि उस क्षेत्र में नगरीय सभ्यता अधिक उन्नत थी और नगर नियोजित ढंग से बसाये गये थे। मोहनजोदड़ों, हड़प्पा, और नाल के खण्डहरों को देखने से ज्ञात होता है कि सिन्धु घाटी के निवासियों को नगर विन्यास, यातायात, व्यापार, प्रशासन आदि का पर्याप्त ज्ञान था। उन्हें अपने समीपवर्ती विशेषतः पश्चिमोत्तर भारत की नदियों, पर्वतों, मैदानों, कृषि एवं पर्यावरण के सम्बन्धों, उद्योग धंधों, व्यापार आदि का अच्छा भौगोलिक ज्ञान था। इसके पश्चात् वैदिक काल (ईसा पूर्व 1500-1000) में लिखे गये ग्रंथों (वेदों, ब्राह्मण ग्रंथों, उपनिषदों, पुराणों आदि) में स्थलों, नगरों, पर्वतों, वनों, मरुस्थलों आदि के उल्लेखनीय भौगोलिक वर्णन मिलते हैं। ईसा से 1000 से 600 वर्ष पूर्व की अवधि में लिखे गये रामायण और महाभारत आदि ग्रंथों में अनेक स्थलों पर महत्वपूर्ण भौगोलिक वर्णन पाये जाते हैं। इसके पश्चात् पौराणिक काल के ग्रंथों में यात्राओं, तीर्थस्थलों, राज्यों, राज्य विस्तार की कथाओं, सामाजिक वर्णनों आदि के रूप में विविध प्रकार के भौगोलिक तत्वों की जानकारी मिलती है। मौर्यकालीन तथा गुप्तकालीन भारत में भूगोल और खगोल सम्बन्धी अनेक अन्वेषण किये गये जिसके फलस्वरूप भौगोलिक ज्ञान अपनी चरमसीमा पर पहुँच गया।
प्राचीन भारत में ऋषि, मुनि एवं ज्ञानी ही प्रमुख अध्येता, शोधकर्ता, ज्ञानदाता, शिक्षक और लेखक थे जो वनों में स्थित आश्रमों में रहकर प्रयोग तथा ज्ञानार्जन करते थे। प्राचीन भारतीय विद्वानों को पृथ्वी की गोल आकृति, पृथ्वी की घूर्णन गति, दिन-रात के छोटा-बड़ा होने, चन्द्र कलाओं, चन्द्रमास, चन्द्रवर्ष, सौर वर्ष, चन्द्र एवं सूर्य ग्रहण, ऋतु परिवर्तन, नदियों, पर्वतों, झीलों, सागरों, आदि का अच्छा ज्ञान था और वे कृषि उद्योग, व्यापार, चिकित्सा, गृह तथा बस्तियों के निर्माण आदि अन्यान्य विषयों में विशिष्ट जानकारी रखते थे। प्राचीन भारत में भौगोलिक ज्ञान के विकास का अध्ययन ऐतिहासिक विकास-क्रम के अनुसार करना अधिक सार्थक होगा, अतः यहाँ इसका वर्णन मानव सभ्यता के विकास के क्रमानुसार किया गया है।

Geographical knowledge in ancient India

Evolution of Geographical Knowledge
India is one of the oldest cradles of human civilization. The Indus Valley Civilization was in an advanced stage in northwestern India between 3000 and 1500 years before Christ. Evidence obtained from archaeological excavations and the ruins of cities show that urban civilization was more advanced in that area and cities were settled in a planned manner. Seeing the ruins of Mohenjodaro, Harappa, and Nal, it is known that the residents of Indus Valley had adequate knowledge of city planning, traffic, trade, administration etc. He had good geographical knowledge of his nearby rivers, mountains, plains, relations between agriculture and environment, industries, trade etc., especially in North-West India. After this, remarkable geographical descriptions of places, cities, mountains, forests, deserts etc. are found in the texts written in the Vedic period (1500-1000 BC) (Vedas, Brahmin texts, Upanishads, Puranas etc.). Important geographical descriptions are found at many places in texts like Ramayana and Mahabharata, written between 1000 and 600 years before Christ. After this, in the texts of the Puranic period, information about various types of geographical elements is found in the form of journeys, pilgrimage sites, states, stories of state expansion, social descriptions etc. Many explorations related to geography and astronomy were done in Maurya and Gupta period India, as a result of which geographical knowledge reached its peak.
In ancient India, sages, sages and knowledgeable people were the main scholars, researchers, knowledge givers, teachers and writers who used to experiment and acquire knowledge by staying in ashrams located in the forests. Ancient Indian scholars were aware of the round shape of the Earth, the rotation speed of the Earth, shortening and lengthening of day and night, lunar phases, lunar month, lunar year, solar year, lunar and solar eclipses, seasonal changes, rivers, mountains, lakes, oceans, etc. He had good knowledge of agriculture and had special knowledge in agricultural industry, trade, medicine, construction of houses and settlements etc. It would be more meaningful to study the development of geographical knowledge in ancient India according to the historical development sequence, hence here it has been described in the sequence of development of human civilization.
