Qila Derawar is one of the most magnificent and historic forts of Pakistan, located deep inside the Cholistan Desert near Bahawalpur. This massive square-shaped fort, with its 40 towering bastions, stands as a symbol of power, history, and desert architecture.
Derawar Fort was originally built in the 9th century by Rai Jajja Bhatti, a Hindu ruler of the Bhatti clan. Later, in the 18th century, it was rebuilt by Nawab Sadeq Muhammad Khan I of Bahawalpur, giving it the strong structure we see today. The fort played an important role in controlling trade routes and defending the region.
Surrounded by golden sand dunes, Qila Derawar looks especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Nearby, you can also find the royal graveyard of the Abbasi Nawabs, built with stunning white marble.
